A Very Long Now gives form to time through language. The sculpture’s sixty NOWs reference the number of seconds in a minute and minutes in an hour, transforming the act of circling the roundabout into a journey around a clock face. Each NOW’s thin profile causes it to appear and disappear to the moving observer, highlighting the fleeting nature of the present moment. Meanwhile, the way they flow and spiral upward reminds us that time is continuous, and each moment is an extension of the past and a bridge into the future—a future that will still be now.
